Getting Clear on What's Important to You and How to Make These Things a Priority in Your Life

In my 10 year career as a professional motivational speaker, I have asked thousands of people these two questions, and each time, no matter where in the world I am, I get very similar responses each time.

The questions are:

  • What's currently important to you?

  • What are you doing about it?

  • Reasonably simple questions, right?

The typical responses I get are: I don't know, and for those who do know what's important to them, they usually aren't doing anything about it because they don't know what steps to take to move towards their goal. Without a strategy, answering these questions can get overwhelming, so I am going to break it down for you into small, digestible chunks with my 4-step process.

To get clear on what's important to you, grab a blank piece of paper and draw a line down the center from top to bottom and draw another line in the center of the page from left to right creating 4 quadrants.

Now label those 4 quadrants with:

  • Relationships.

  • Career.

  • Financial.

  • Lifestyle, that can encompass things like personal development, religion and spirituality as well as the more obvious components.

Give yourself at least 30-60 min of quiet time to write out as many things as come to mind in each of your 4 quadrants. Your ideas can be big and lofty dreams and goals, as well as more realistic desires. The key is to free flow and write as much as possible, without judgement or criticism.

Once you've completed each of your 4 quadrants, you will see many different priorities staring you in the face. Now it's time to put them into a hierarchical order from most important to least important. You can do this by numbering them or re-writing 4 new lists on a fresh piece of paper or on your computer.

Lastly, you need to work out what action you need to take to make your priorities come to fruition in your life.

If you recall from lesson 1, this program is structured to give you the specific strategies you need to create and live an authentic life that's lived on your terms. You need to put in the work to get the results.

Starting with the most important priority in each of your four quadrants, think about what you can do today, what you can do next week, and what you can do within 30 days to move you closer to achieving that goal or to ensure that specific priority in your life actually comes to fruition.

If there's any part of your life that does not fulfil you, it's probably because you haven't taken the right action, at the right time to fill that void.

My promise to you is this, if you follow the advice in this program, and actually put in the work, you will most definitely see positive shifts in your life that will propel you to keep taking intentional action towards creating and living your most authentic life on your terms.

As a reminder, my mantra in life is knowledge without action equals nothing. So you've definitely got a little bit of homework to do and please honor yourself, honor your family, by taking the time to go through the steps to get the results that you actually want.

Happy Journaling!

I'll see you in lesson 3.
